I’ve been a member of many different gyms over the past few years: YMCA, New York Sports Club, and the Metro Gym. The following issues are common in any gym you join, I swear! I try to ignore what bothers me because bottom line: I’m at the gym to exercise. I’d much rather go running at the park and do my sit ups and push ups there, too. But I know I have a hard time keeping myself motivated if I’m not by weights that could help me build some muscle. Below are the reasons why I don’t like the gym.
#1 Men who come over to “help” me with weights
This one is number one because it is the MOST annoying. I don’t understand why people think it’s okay to come over and just start touching me and my weights! The first time this beef head came over I listened to him politely, but went back to what I was doing because it works for me. When he came back the second time to direct me again, I was over it and left without another word. There is a difference between offering friendly advice and just being plain annoying and invasive. This past week someone showed me how to use the machine I was on to work out different muscles. A different approach, better response.
#2 Someone who asks to use my equipment while I am still using it
It’s annoying when someone is hogging something, I get that. But this time, I had just sat my ass down to lift when another guy came over and asked to share the bench. I hadn’t even started my first set! My response: “You can stay and watch me but no I don’t want to share with you.”
#3 All the broken equipment
There was a record number of treadmill out of maintenance at the gym today. Those little knobs you use to set your weights were missing, too. Enough said.
This stuff doesn’t happen too often (except for all the broken/worn down equipment) but I like the gym, regardless. It’s useful on a rainy day when I can’t use the track or run at the park. Well, I could still use the track but let’s face it: there’s no reason to get dirty like that. It’s also a money motivation for me because I hate spending money if I don’t use a product or service. I signed myself up for a one year contract I instantly regretted! All I have to focus on is me, my body, and my wellness and get out fast when I finish my workout.
